How to Measure Yourself at Home for the Perfect Fit

Few things are more frustrating than ordering a dress you love and finding it doesn’t fit. The good news is that getting the right size doesn’t need a tailor. With a soft measuring tape and five minutes, you can measure yourself accurately at home and shop with confidence. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide, plus how to read a size chart from XS to 2XL.

What You’ll Need

  • A soft, flexible measuring tape (not a metal builder’s tape)
  • A mirror, or a friend to help
  • Fitted clothing or underwear, so the tape sits close to your body
  • A notebook or phone to record your numbers

Stand tall and relaxed, with your feet together and your arms by your sides. Breathe normally, and don’t pull the tape too tight. It should sit snug but not dig in.

Step 1: Bust

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level across your back. Check in the mirror that it isn’t slipping lower at the back. This measurement matters most for dresses, tops and fitted jackets.

Step 2: Waist

Find your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button. Wrap the tape around and keep it parallel to the floor. To find it easily, bend sideways and note where your body creases.

Step 3: Hips

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually 7 to 9 inches below your waist. Keep your feet together so the measurement is accurate. This is essential for skirts, trousers, shorts and co-ord bottoms.

Step 4: Length Measurements

For dresses and skirts, a few length measurements help you choose the right hemline:

  • Shoulder to waist: from the top of your shoulder down to your natural waist
  • Waist to hem: from your natural waist to where you’d like the hem to fall (knee, midi or ankle)
  • Inseam: from your inner thigh to your ankle, for trousers

How to Read a Size Chart

Once you have your measurements, the size chart is your best friend. At Trendland, every product page includes a size chart, so you can compare your numbers directly with the garment’s measurements.

  1. Compare each measurement separately. Look at your bust, waist and hips against the chart. They don’t always fall in the same size.
  2. If you fall between sizes, consider the garment’s fit. For fitted styles with a structured bodice, size up for comfort. For relaxed or flowy styles, you can often choose the smaller size.
  3. Check the fabric. Linen blends have a slight natural give, while structured pieces like tailored waistcoats have less stretch.
  4. Choose by the largest area. For co-ord sets, check both top and bottom measurements. You can often adjust one piece through fit rather than size.
  5. Remember the range. Trendland sizes run true to size from XS to 2XL, so your measurements should match the chart without guesswork.

Common Measuring Mistakes

  • Pulling the tape too tight, which leads to ordering a size too small
  • Measuring over bulky clothing
  • Letting the tape slide up or down at the back
  • Measuring once and never rechecking, since bodies change day to day

Measure twice, and take the average if the numbers differ slightly.

Keep Your Measurements Handy

Save your numbers in your phone notes. The next time you shop at Trendland or anywhere else, you’ll have everything ready in seconds. Update them every few months or after any major change.

A great fit begins with knowing your own measurements. With a few minutes and a measuring tape, you can shop online with confidence and love how every piece sits.
